The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, conducted a site visit at the Macassar housing project earlier this week to check on its progress. The project will provide approximately 2 469 qualifying beneficiaries from the approved target areas with State-subsidised Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes.
“This housing project will see some of Cape Town’s most vulnerable residents become first-time property owners and create employment opportunities for the local community during the construction period. Construction of the engineering infrastructure and the houses is a multi-year project and approximately R132 million has been budgeted for this project over the next three years. The civil services portion of this contract is set for completion by June 2023, if all goes according to plan.” Said Councillor Malusi
The civil services construction is on-going and practical completion for phase 1 of the project was achieved on 30 April 2021. The planning of the top structure implementation for phase 1 is at an advanced stage and is set to begin in September 2021. Phase 1 of the project will provide opportunities for 605 qualifying beneficiaries. The project will also include the provision of an electricity network to support the housing project and planning for this is going well.

“When homes are built for our most vulnerable residents, it empowers them as first-time property owners. Our qualifying beneficiaries are one step closer to receiving their BNG homes which they have been waiting patiently for many years. This project is an example of the City’s commitment to service delivery through the provision of housing opportunities in a fair and systematic way that does not allow or encourage queue-jumping.” said Councillor Booi.
The Macassar housing project is a celebration of the partnership between the City and the community, who have been working together for many years to witness this project become a reality for our qualifying beneficiaries. The community is encouraged to continue to support and work together with the City to ensure that this project stays on schedule, so we are able to celebrate the handover of these houses to our qualifying beneficiaries and their families soon.
Beneficiaries for this project will be selected in accordance with the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
