The level of the Vaal Dam has slightly dropped this week, while some major dams forming part of the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS) also decreased, affecting the overall level of the system.
The Vaal Dam has dropped by 0.8% from 92.8% last week to 92.0% this week. Compared to the previous year at the same time, the dam level is much as then it was recorded at 42.8%.
The IVRS, the biggest system in the country and which consists of 14 dams has lost 0.4% having gone down to 86.3% from 86.7% last week. However, this week’s level is higher compared with last year’s when it was at 63.1%.
The Grootdraai Dam has also recorded a decline this week. Currently, the dam is floating at 83.6% while last week it was sitting at 84.7%. The dam has seen a decline by 01%. Last year at the same time it was at 82.0%.

Currently at above the 50% neutral mark, the Katse Dam has slightly declined this week. The dam is now at 68.9%, decreasing from 69.9% last week. The present level is an improvement from last year’s trivial 31.1%.
Maintaining last week levels is the Sterkfontein Dam which is recorded at 99.6%. Judged against last year’s level at the same time, the dam has been consistent as it sat at 93.9%.
Locked in a gloomy state, the Mohale Dam is still floating at a concerning level. The dam has recorded a further downturn from last week when it was at 33.0%. This week the dam is at 32.4%.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) encourages households and industry benefitting from the IVRS to continue adhering to water saving methods, saying that it is these very methods that have seen the System through the dry winter season.
