The City of Cape Town has released a caution for motorists travelling on Swartklip Road (M49) between Spine Road and Baden Powell Drive that the road shoulder has collapsed. It is therefore upon the motorists to be extra cautious and take care of their safety. Road repair teams are busy reinstating temporary works on this section.
Recently, the teams backfilled the section, and placed some sandbags as a temporary safety measure to prevent the road shoulder from further erosion. This step, however, is not sufficient to reassure residents of their safety as some of these sandbags were washed away overnight due to the on-going rain. The teams went back the following morning to reinstate the temporary works until such time as the weather allows for permanent work to be undertaken.

The administrative council hence appeals to motorists travelling along this section of Swartklip Road to please exercise extra caution which includes slowing down, and avoiding the shoulder of the road. Also, they recommend that road users consider using alternative routes as far as possible to avoid potential hazards.
The City is doing everything possible to secure the road; however, their efforts are being further complicated by inclement weather.
It is uncertain what caused the shoulder to collapse but the City will conduct an investigation as soon as the cold front has cleared.
