The Department of Water and Sanitation is confident that the construction of Amalia Water Infrastructure Upgrade Project located in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, will go a long way in stabilizing water challenges in the area.
The project, funded through the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG) and classified under the municipality’s Rural Water Supply Programme, commenced in September 2020, and was expected to be completed by the 30th of June 2021.
However, due to delays caused by heavy rainfalls earlier this year and shortage of materials from suppliers, the project is expected to be completed by July 2021.
By the end of April 2021 the project was 32% complete.

The objective of this project is to provide a basic level of water supply service to the community of Amalia. The hydrogeological work included the aquifer testing of existing boreholes and the drilling of additional production boreholes, to meet the future water demand of Amalia.
A new elevated steel storage tank of 400kl will be added to the existing storage tank. The upgrading of the water reticulation network includes the following:
- Class 9 &12 uPVC pipes: 3 310m x 63mmø, 3 995m x 75mm, 520m x 90mmø and 1 230m x 160mmø. The reticulation network has been designed as such to accommodate yard connections, which is the standard implemented in the rest of the village.
- The project has created jobs for community members of which 90% is the youth and 45% is women. This will go a long way in giving skills to the youth of Amalia.
Communities are urged to take responsibility of the water infrastructure in their communities, guard it in order to stop vandalism, and to report any criminal activities in close vicinity of the infrastructure.
