The current first phase of the new human settlement development in Railton, Swellendam, which commenced on 19 September 2021, has thus far created 13 job opportunities for local residents.
This phase, which consists of civil infrastructure development is not labour intensive, but as the development continues, it is envisaged that a further 40 job opportunities will be created. Workers will also be assigned to a specific team and receive on the job training. Amongst others, this phase includes the construction of the underground stormwater drainage pipe, and the sewerage pipe, which includes the erf connections of the water supply network, along with the installation of sewer manholes at erf connections and the electrical sleeves.

This development forms part of the Integrated Residential Development Programme (IRDP) and has a budget allocation of just over R 76 million. It will deliver 965 serviced sites and is expected to be concluded by the end of February 2023.
Minister Simmers said: “The creation of jobs and empowerment opportunities are key components of all our developments. I want to assure the people of Swellendam that we will continue to create further opportunities for people from the area. It is critical that residents are registered on their municipal database for job seekers, so that when employment opportunities do arise, they’re able to access it.
I also once again call on the community to ensure that the sites are not invaded, as this will only lead to unnecessary and avoidable delays of the project. As the Western Cape Government, we remain committed to upskilling and empowering our residents, particularly our unemployed youth”.
