The Free State provincial water storage capacity is at a satisfactory state this week at 93.2% even though there is a marginal decline from last week’s 93.7%. The amount of water stored in reservoirs this year is much better when compared the same period last year when water volumes were measured at 79.7% during this period.
The Bloemfontein Water Supply System with four dams supplying water to Mangaung Metro and surrounds has taken a knock this week, recording 76.2 down from 76.6% last week. This system was at 53.7% this time last year.
The Rustfontein Dam within the Bloemfontein Water Supply System supplied by Modder River has also declined this week, down to 61.3% from 62.5%. Even though there is a recorded decline, the water levels in the dam are much better when compared to 29.0%recorded during the same period last year.

Groothoek Dam also supplying Bloemfontein in Kgabanyane River is at 86.9% this week, a slight decrease from 87.6% recorded last week. The dam was at 63.4% during the same period last year. Meanwhile, the Welbedacht Dam supplied by Caledon River is at 100% capacity compared to last year’s 76.6%. Metsi-Matsho Dam is sitting at 72.3% a decrease from last year 81.4% same time.
The FikaPatso dam has shown significance improvement of 81.0% as compared to last year’s 38.0% level. Gariep Dam supplying in Orange River is at 87.4% a slight decline from last year’s 86.1%. Vanderkloof Dam also feeding from Orange River is steady at 98.6% this week. Krugersdrift Dam is at 99.0%.
The Department of Water and Sanitation would like to urge water users in the province to use water wisely and assist government in its efforts to ensure water security in the province and the rest of the country.
