The Housing Department in the City of Johannesburg has provided 22 people whose shacks burnt down temporary accommodation at the Brixton Recreational Centre.
The fire broke out last week Friday in Vrededorp, Johannesburg, destroying 29 shacks and displacing 55 people. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fire was caused by an unattended paraffin stove.
Joburg Housing has also committed to helping displaced fire victims with building material. Wreckage removal started on Tuesday, 27 July 2021, in order to allow for the process of rebuilding to kick off.
Of the affected individuals, only 22 have agreed to be moved to, while the rest have found their own accommodation in the interim.

Since Friday 23rd July 2021, several interventions have been received from the Disaster Management team, the City of Joburg’s Department of Social Development, NGOs, political parties and Joburg residents. They have donated food parcels, clothing, mattresses and blankets, among other items.
The City urges people to be cautious when using fires, candles, and paraffin stoves during these trying times. The City also sends its sincere condolences to the family who lost their loved ones during the blaze.
