City of Cape Town’s first online market, which went live on the 27th of May 2021, has now been extended until Wednesday, 30 June 2021. Initially online shoppers could look forward to over 500 products from 110 informal traders, vendors and crafters when visiting the pilot Cape Town Online Market. These figures were exceeded by more than 150 informal traders, vendors and crafters registering more than 600 products.
Products range from baby clothing to lifestyle items, home décor, fashion and beauty items, homemade furniture, pet items and kitchenware.
This initiative, spearheaded by the City’s Urban Management Directorate, is a pilot e-commerce platform showcasing Cape Town-based vendors and aims to provide support to small businesses by selling their products online.

Increased economic opportunities
“Cape Town surprised me with their willingness to take part in this pilot online market and to exceed our expectations with not only the number of vendors registered, but also the quality of the locally produced products on offer. Because of these successes, we have decided to extend the online market from the initial end date of 9 June 2021 to 30 June 2021,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
“We continue our commitment to assist the informal sector with increased economic opportunities to minimise the negative economic impact caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and to find innovative ways of doing business. We call on the public to continue to support these small businesses by browsing and shopping at the Cape Town Online Market,” he added.
